Project Overview

A comprehensive redesign of the Munich public transport (MVV) ticket machine interface, focusing on accessibility, clear navigation, and user-centered design to solve common usability issues.

The Product

The touch interface of the MVV ticket machine is to receive a redesign, improving both its visual appearance and its functional features.

The Problem & The Goal

Overall, purchasing a public transport ticket is fraught with difficulties, especially for people not from Munich who are unfamiliar with the transit system. Surveys revealed critical feedback regarding the design and usability of the current ticket system.

The goal is to create a redesign that drastically improves the User Experience—a visual and functional upgrade of the machine—so that every user (especially non-tech-savvy individuals and tourists) can get their customized ticket quickly without having to overthink.

User Research: Pain Points

  • 1. Ticket Selection: This problem occurred with almost all respondents. The MVG ticket system is generally confusing, and the available guides are not necessarily helpful. Many frequently buy the wrong ticket.
  • 2. Navigation: Although the machine has large buttons, many older people still struggle with navigation. The design needs to adhere more closely to Silver User Design guidelines.
  • 3. Interface Design: The machine's design is outdated, visually unappealing, and frustrates users. This degrades the entire User Experience.
  • 4. Features: Potentially useful features are missing (the product is definitely expandable), while unusable or unnecessary features clutter the interface.

Our Learnings

  • No App Constraints: Designing an interface that doesn't fit on a mobile phone was very unfamiliar, as different aspects, proportions, and navigation become important here. It was definitely a varied experience that pushed us out of our comfort zone.
  • Broad Target Audience: People of all ages are affected. Aspects like Silver User Design, contrast, and accessibility suddenly became vital, and we became increasingly aware of their significance. We want to pay more attention to this in future projects.
  • User Testings: We realized how useful usability tests can be. They decisively shaped and advanced the development in the final phase. We want to use them more effectively in our design process in the future.
